Lucas's people are not starving: yet. As the leader of the Fifth Column - a growing, loosely-connected network of Sanctuaries deep under the cavern-cities of Kethemar - he has untold mouths to feed. However, his avenues to bring in food are vanishing by the day. His world is one of mountainous islands rising from a shallow ocean, whose people grind out their lives under the wheels of a subverted democracy called CentGov. The will of CentGov is enforced by the Legion: a para-military police force whose elites are given wing-growth treatments. Long ago, before he learned the true way of the world, Lucas had risen from humble beginnings to be inducted into those elite ranks, and received wings of his own. All too soon, however, he found himself marked by the very government he swore to serve, and fled to the Sanctuaries, leaving his life and love behind. Back then he'd hoped to rally the Fifth Column, organize them into an effective resistance, and free the people from their oppression. Now, however, he struggles simply to keep his people alive. As the excess of CentGov increase, the Sanctuaries are becoming more and more overcrowded, and resources are growing scarce. Lucas and his inner circle must find a way to feed their growing numbers or they will face starvation within the Sanctuaries, and the safety they sought to provide will become a dangerous trap. If you like wild rides, challenging concepts, and civilization-level conflicts, you'll love this book of political intrigue! Join Lucas as he struggles to keep the dream of freedom alive. Wander the caves with him, and fly on the Wings of Kethelmar.
