Few Chinese martial arts possess a historical tradition as complex-or as contested-as Wing Chun. Different lineages preserve different accounts of the art's origins, founders, masters, migrations, and development. Over time, these stories have become an important part of Wing Chun culture itself.

Rather than accepting lineage stories automatically as historical fact, the book compares different accounts, examines their historical context, and attempts to distinguish documented events from later oral traditions, legends, and mythology.
The story is placed within the larger environment in which Wing Chun developed: southern China, the social and political upheavals of the nineteenth century, changing martial communities, different lines of transmission, and the eventual expansion of Wing Chun beyond China into an international martial art.
The book also explores the different versions of Wing Chun history preserved by its lineages. These traditions remain important even when their historical accuracy cannot be demonstrated, because they reveal how generations of practitioners understood their art and constructed their identities around it.
