William McKendree: A Biographical Study offers a comprehensive exploration into the life and lasting influence of the fourth bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. As the first American-born bishop of Methodism, McKendree's journey mirrors the expansion and stabilization of the denomination during the formative years of the United States. This biographical work, authored by Bishop Elijah Embree Hoss, meticulously traces McKendree's path from his early experiences in the Revolutionary War to his transformative leadership within the religious landscape.
The narrative delves into McKendree's pivotal role in shaping the administrative structure of the church, his tireless travels as a circuit rider, and his close association with other foundational figures like Francis Asbury. Readers will find a detailed account of his theological convictions and his unwavering commitment to the growth of Methodism in the American West and South. By examining both the personal character and public ministry of this significant figure, this study provides valuable insights into the social and spiritual history of the 19th-century United States. It remains an essential resource for those interested in Methodist history, early American religious life, and the development of ecclesiastical leadership.
