Can a prayer be a weapon?
Every religious tradition offers language for blessing - and, quietly, language for cursing. This book examines the moment those two uses of prayer become indistinguishable: when a person closes their eyes, folds their hands, and asks a higher power not for mercy on someone else, but for their ruin.
Drawing on history, comparative religion, moral philosophy, and psychology, When Prayer Becomes a Curse traces malicious intercessory prayer from ancient Mesopotamian curse tablets to contemporary social media prayer campaigns - and asks what this practice does to the person who prays it, the person it targets, and the communities that tolerate it.
This is not an attack on religion. It is a close, compassionate examination of a pattern found in every tradition this book surveys - Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Indigenous, and occult - paired with the extensive compassionate resources each of these same traditions already offers as an answer.
Inside, you'll find:
- The psychology of moral certainty, dehumanization, and religious tribalism
- A clear ethical line between legitimate prayer for justice and malicious cursing disguised as piety
- The documented costs of hostile prayer - to families, communities, and the person who prays it
- Practical guidance for ethical prayer, critical thinking, and building communities that heal rather than harm
For readers of faith wrestling with anger toward those who've wronged them, for anyone who has witnessed prayer used as a weapon within their own family or congregation, and for anyone curious about where devotion ends and hostility begins - this book offers not judgment, but a path back to what prayer was always meant to be.
