As the world processes the wreckage, atmospheric events begin occurring at sites of ancient human association. A bronze sky over the Sea of Galilee. Fish text in the Jordan River, written in the oldest recoverable form of the language. A face in the still waters of the Tiber, laughing. The surviving faithful interpret the signs as prophecy fulfilled. They are right that the signs are real. They are wrong about everything else.
Something very old is awake. Something that was present before the control system was built over it, that watched the new stories run their course with the patience of entities for whom three thousand years is an afternoon, and that is now, with the specific amusement of something that has been waiting a very long time for a very predictable conclusion, making itself known.
Mara joins a small group of scholars, a reformed televangelist, a Northumberland shepherd who has never needed to be told what the moor is, and a Syrian grandfather whose hills have been singing for fifty years. Together they map what was suppressed, recover the language for what was always there, and confront the oldest question in the new form it demands: if the gods we were given were engineered, what is the actual thing beneath them? And when you find it, vast and patient and genuinely amused by the entire spectacle of human religious history, are you free of it? Or have you simply traded one governance for another?
