What the Witness Could Not Say is a collection of four full-length companion novellas to four of the most celebrated novels in the English language: Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, H. G. Wells's The Island of Doctor Moreau, Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, and H. G. Wells's The Time Machine.
Each novella reimagines a classic novel from the perspective of a character the original author silenced -- giving voice, agency, and a complete inner life to figures who existed only at the margins of someone else's story.
The Four Testimonies:
What the Actress Knew -- Sibyl Vane is the young actress who falls in love with Dorian Gray and makes the fatal mistake of letting that love make her honest. This is her story: three weeks in a London theatre, from the first night she sees the beautiful stranger in the third row to the dressing room where she will make her final choice.
What the Law Could Not Hold -- M'ling is a creature made on Moreau's operating table from a bear cub captured in the wild. He learns language, loyalty, and love -- and discovers that the word the maker never taught him is the only one that matters.
What Pip Saw Below -- Pip is the cabin boy aboard the Pequod, a young Black teenager from Connecticut who plays the tambourine and makes the sailors laugh. When he falls overboard and floats alone on the Pacific, he sees something in the deep that no human mind was built to hold.
What the Garden Remembered -- Weena is the small, gentle Eloi who attaches herself to the Time Traveller in the year 802,701. She brings him flowers, sleeps against his chest, and fears the dark. She has never had words for what she feels. The flowers say it for her.
These are not retellings. They are companion works -- designed to be read alongside the originals or entirely on their own. Each novella honors the source material while exploring what the original author left unsaid. No prior knowledge of the classic novels is required, though an afterword provides reading recommendations for those who want to return to the originals with new eyes.
