The Cairn was founded as a temporary answer. A generation later, the answer is due to expire.
Its habitation rings have grown longer. Its corridors have acquired names no planner gave them. Children have inherited work, homes and arguments that began before they were born. Decisions once made as emergency exceptions have become the foundations of ordinary life.
Now the station's founding instrument must be renewed.
Every sector arrives carrying different claims about what the city is, who owes what to whom and which old arrangements must survive. Records return through new hands. Names entered decades earlier acquire consequences nobody who wrote them could have anticipated.
Beyond the station's lawful boundary, civilian hulls keep watch for movement past the last certified mark. Nobody can yet say what is coming or whether it is coming for the Cairn.
Inside, the work cannot stop.
Doors still need fitting. Water still needs booking. Hulls still need walls, crews and departure hours. Public boards must still tell the truth at the time somebody reads them.
The Cairn has spent a generation learning how to admit people, allocate what they need, give them a voice and trust the work that keeps them alive. Its final task is deciding what can be handed forward without turning the past into a prison.
What the Station Keeps concludes The Cairn with a story of civic memory, external unease and the ordinary labour by which a temporary station finally becomes a permanent city.
