What Rūmī's Reed Knows: Al-Ḥallāj, Ibn ʿArabī, and Ibn al-Fāriḍ on the Metaphysics of Participation
A reed cut from the reed bed cries out in every register it can find: this is Rūmī's opening image, and philosophy has never known quite what to do with it. Is the cry an ornament or an argument? This book insists it is an argument. Across five interlocking problems, three mystical poets, al-Ḥallāj martyred for a single sentence, Ibn ʿArabī, who mapped the theophanies of the divine names, and Ibn al-Fāriḍ, whose Tāʼiyyat remains the most sustained metaphysical poem in the Arabic tradition, are read not as devotional ornament to philosophy but as its most rigorous instrument. Their testimony, examined side by side across centuries and genres, converges on a single claim: that the self does not stand outside reality observing it, but participates in a disclosure it did not initiate and cannot exhaust. Rūmī's reed stands at the threshold of the book, not at its centre, marking the exile every knower must cross to reach what these three witnesses report from the other side. Each chapter poses its own hard question, of causation and continuity, of solitude and testimony, of poetry's claim to prove rather than merely evoke, of justice under God whose names include the beautiful along with the majestic, and answers it by holding the metaphysics accountable to the poem's exact words, not around them. The result is a work of philosophy that takes mysticism at its word: precise where precision is owed, and honest about the limit past which no word, however exact, can go.
