The ancients assumed the universe was alive and had to explain death. We assume it is dead and cannot explain life.
That reversal, Glenn W. Campbell argues, is why an age of extraordinary science feels so aimless underneath it.
What is Reality...Really? traces the question across four eras, not as a survey to memorize but as an argument still running.
Plato opens it. His late trilogy, staged against Socrates' approaching trial, insists a state needs leaders who can hold eternal principles and changing particulars together at once. Then Aristotle, a biologist before he was anything else, whose metaphysics assumes life must be explained by life, never by death.
The medieval chapters take up angels and the Trinity through Augustine and Aquinas, before Duns Scotus splits the unanswerable why does anything exist into two questions that can actually be answered.
The modern turn is the heart of this metaphysics book. Descartes is rescued from the caricature of the cold rationalist. Kant sets out to secure certainty and is diverted into a narrower question, not what is true, but how we experience knowing. Hegel refuses the limit: reality is not merely logical; logic is reality.
The contemporary chapters follow the shift from a God-centered phenomenology to a human-centered one: Husserl on consciousness, Heidegger on care, Derrida on language. Gadamer closes with something rare in modern philosophy books: hope. Understanding a difficult text, or a difficult age, remains genuinely possible.
Campbell taught Philosophy, Religion, Greek and Mathematics at the university level while running a structural and forensic engineering firm. He writes for readers who never stopped asking.
Appendices bring you face to face with Parmenides and Aquinas on being itself.
