This book follows the story of Venezuela's money from the rise of Hugo Chávez in 1999 through the economic crisis that followed under Nicolás Maduro. It examines inflation, wages, currency controls, government spending, price controls, shortages, and the repeated redenominations that ultimately removed fourteen zeros from the bolÃvar.
But this is not simply a book about statistics.
It is about what happens when economic decisions reach the supermarket, the paycheck, and the dinner table.
Why could a salary that once supported a family eventually become almost worthless? Why did an oil-rich nation struggle to keep basic products on store shelves? How did policies intended to make essential goods affordable contribute to shortages and distorted markets? And how did Venezuela reach the point where something as ordinary as toilet paper became a symbol of a national economic crisis?
Through historical analysis, economic data, real-world examples, and personal perspective, the book explains Venezuela's transformation in language designed for everyday readers-not economists.
It also asks a larger question.
Was Venezuela's collapse inevitable, or were there opportunities to choose a different path?
Rather than treating the country's experience only as a political argument, this book examines the economic mechanisms behind the crisis and the consequences those decisions produced for ordinary Venezuelans.
This is the first book in a trilogy about Venezuela's economic story: what happened to its money, what happened to its extraordinary wealth, and ultimately, what the country could do differently to build lasting prosperity.
