What God Never Wanted argues that the Torah's engagement with animals - its welfare laws, its sacrificial system, its dietary regulations, the binding of Isaac, and the institutional corruptions that have hollowed out both - forms a single coherent argument pointing consistently in one direction. The blood was never what God wanted. The inner movement of the person bringing the sacrifice was. And once that is understood, everything else follows: why the prophets rejected sacrifice while the Temple still stood, why the Akedah is about attachment rather than death, why the Temple market was a corruption rather than a convenience, and why industrial animal agriculture - with its kosher-certified packages and its invisible slaughter lines - has done to Jewish food law exactly what the Temple market did to Jewish worship.
This is not a book about animal rights. It proceeds entirely from inside the Jewish intellectual tradition, from the texts, from the legal logic, from what the tradition's greatest interpreters have said about what the Torah was always trying to teach. It follows that argument further than the tradition has been willing to go - and ends with a question rather than a verdict.
The Torah knew where it was going. The only question is whether we are willing to follow.
