In 1656, the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam issued the most severe excommunication in its recorded history against a twenty-three-year-old lens grinder named Baruch de Spinoza. The community still exists. It still stands by the verdict. Spinoza is studied in philosophy departments and theology faculties across the world.
The community that expelled him was not evil. It was operating within a structure that gave it no other tool for managing a challenge to its authority - a structure that confused the threat to its own institutional position for a threat to the tradition it was entrusted to protect. That confusion is not a historical curiosity. It is the recurring structural failure that has fractured Jewish civilization across twelve centuries, and it is fracturing it now.
In Order to Endure addresses two failures that share a single cause. Jewish civilization is fracturing under legitimacy warfare that no current framework prevents - each faction using definitional authority to exclude others, consuming collective energy that belongs to Judaism's purposes. Simultaneously, individual Jews are failing to find a place within Judaism not because they have rejected its purposes but because institutions have confused boundary maintenance for purpose. The gay Jew who spent decades outside the door. The child of a Jewish father told he is not Jewish. The intellectually serious Jew whose questions were unwelcome. The secular Israeli who served in the military but cannot marry in the country she defended. Each was told they did not fully belong. The institutions were wrong.
The intra-Protestant conflicts that produced 150 years of catastrophic European warfare followed precisely this pattern. The solution was not theological agreement - no one changed their minds about doctrine. The solution was architectural: a framework that made the warfare unnecessary by prohibiting any single faction from making its definition of authentic faith binding on everyone else.
Drawing on the constitutional methodology of The Lessons of Ruin and In Order to Create a More Perfect Union, Richard Diamond applies James Madison's diagnostic discipline to Judaism's recurring failure modes. The result is a constitutional framework built on eight recovered purposes - survival, memory, the rejection of false ultimacy, ethical witness, the pursuit of understanding, repair, the sanctification of ordinary life, and inclusion - and five structural prohibitions derived from the tradition's own documented failures. It requires no governing body. The Declaration of Independence had no enforcement machinery either. It changed the world anyway.
In Order to Endure is that kind of argument - addressed to every Jew who has felt outside the door, to every communal leader who knows something is wrong but lacks language precise enough to name it, and to every community that has mistaken the boundary for the purpose. The door was always open. This book explains why.
