The Western Xia Dynasty was one of medieval China's most formidable-and least familiar-powers. Founded by the Tangut people in the northwest, it rose between the Song and Liao dynasties, fought for control of the Hexi Corridor and the Yellow River frontier, and built a distinctive state with its own writing system, institutions, military traditions, and cultural identity.
This narrative history follows the Tanguts from their disputed Qiang and Tuoba origins through the rise of Li Jiqian and Li Deming to Li Yuanhao, the ambitious ruler who proclaimed Great Xia in 1038. It enters the wars with the Northern Song, including Sanchuan Pass, Haoshuichuan, and Dingchuan, and brings figures such as Fan Zhongyan, Han Qi, Emperor Renzong, and the powerful Tangut generals and court families into the story.
Beyond the battlefield, the book explores Tangut government, Confucian education, Buddhism, the Western Xia script, trade, diplomacy with the Liao and Jin, palace struggles, the Ren Dejing conspiracy, and the growing pressure of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire.
Written for general readers, The Western Xia Dynasty: A History of China explains complicated frontier politics in clear, conversational language while keeping the people-their ambitions, calculations, loyalties, mistakes, and remarkable survival strategies-at the center of the history.
