Well... I found out.
My Main Squeeze, Richie, and I set out before sunrise with hiking poles, snacks, a plan, and what I can only describe as an unreasonable amount of confidence.
What followed was one very long day of hiking, laughing, resting on random rocks, watching runners fly past like Hermes, discovering mountain sheep-goats posing like they were waiting for a portrait artist, and eventually crawling through a boulder field like a mountain goat who had recently discovered she was also a cat.
Then we reached the summit.
We made it!
Cue the celebration, the exhaustion, and the realization that we still had to get back down.
From there, things got even more interesting. There were buses, a QR code that chose drama, chaotic weather, a waterfall nose, sunscreen betrayal, a murder of crows, increasingly offended feet, and a hiking app that apparently considered almost there to be a flexible concept.
There was also pocket jerky.
A lot of pocket jerky.
Told with humor, fun pop-culture references, questionable comparisons, and the occasional conversation with my own body, We Climbed Pikes Peak is my personal account of taking on a 14er and discovering that adventure doesn't have to go perfectly to become a great story.
Sometimes you just have to keep moving, find something to laugh about, and hope your truck is still where you left it.
We made it to the summit and all the way back down.
And somehow, I came away with a story worth telling.
Would I do it again?
