Before citizens even vote, politicians, financiers and tenderpreneurs meet in luxurious hotels to divide Cabinet posts, government appointments and public contracts. Meanwhile, hospitals lack medicine, school fees become unbearable, businesses struggle under punitive taxes and families survive on handouts purchased with money stolen from them.
When another election approaches, yesterday's oppressors experience miraculous political conversions. They condemn the corruption they defended, promise the reforms they obstructed and present themselves as the nation's new saviours. The crowds applaud-and the cycle begins again.
