Wasa'il al-Shia stands as one of the most monumental collections of Shi'i jurisprudential hadith, rigorously documenting every dimension of religious law. Compiled by the illustrious Shaykh Hurr Amili (d. 1693), this encyclopedic masterpiece comprises approximately 36,000 traditions across 30 volumes.
Driven by the necessity of engaging directly with the explicit words of the Ahl al-Bayt, Shaykh Hurr Amili designed this collection as a complete, self-sufficient constitution for both knowledge and practice. Systematically organized by topic, the work aggregates traditions from reliable and mass-transmitted textual sources, expanding beyond the Four Canonical Books to gather the preserved notebooks of the early faithful.
Above all, it serves as an unaltered conduit to the Infallibles, offering the greatest gift possible: the ability to base one's religion firmly upon the pristine teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt.
Volume 12 encompasses two primary jurisprudential themes: the ethics of social interaction and the strict regulations of the pilgrim's sacred state. The first section outlines the rules of social interaction, emphasizing the obligations of brotherhood, good companionship, truthfulness, and maintaining family ties. It explicitly prohibits social transgressions such as backbiting, lying, and harboring malice against fellow believers. The volume then transitions to the foundational rites of pilgrimage, detailing the establishment of Ihram. This includes physical preparations like performing the ritual bath, alongside the spiritual mandates of formulating the intention and reciting the Talbiyah. Lastly, the text extensively catalogs the prohibitions during Ihram. It meticulously defines the restrictions on hunting, wearing sewn garments, applying perfume, marriage contracted during the pilgrimage, and seeking shade, while also detailing the specific environmental protections for the sacred precinct.
