Ward of the State is a literary thriller about accountability, grief, and the distance between a corporate balance sheet and a human life. It is also, in its bones, a love story: a daughter trying to understand how her father died, and what it would mean to make that death matter.
The system described in this novel - the private equity acquisition of nursing homes, the measurable increase in patient mortality, the regulatory capture that makes accountability functionally impossible - is real. The Harvard Medical School studies are real. The deaths are real.
