Jake is a burnt-out foreign correspondent with a failed marriage, a redundancy letter and nowhere left to run. On impulse, he takes to the ancient Camino de Santiago pilgrimage path, carrying too much weight in his pack and considerably more in his head.
What follows is not the journey he expected.
On the path, he meets Chuck, an enigmatic American whose wisdom is matched only by his refusal to spare Jake's feelings. There is Greta, a Swedish woman walking with cancer and a fury she hasn't yet named. Andrzej, a Polish pilgrim whose damaged feet and unshakeable purpose put Jake's self-pity in a different perspective. And Luke - a dog who finds Jake in a mountain village and declines to leave his side.
Across the Pyrenees, the coastal cliffs of Asturias and the ancient forests of Galicia, Jake is stripped of his defences one blistered kilometre at a time. The Camino offers no easy answers - only the next waymark, the next day's walking and the slow, uncomfortable work of becoming someone capable of living the life that is actually available.
Walking on Edge is a novel about grief, faith, and the particular honesty that long walking produces - for anyone who has ever needed to move their feet to clear their head.
