Volpone is a play written by Ben Jonson that was first performed in 1606. The play is a satirical comedy that follows the story of a wealthy Venetian nobleman named Volpone who has no heirs and pretends to be on his deathbed in order to trick several greedy men into offering him gifts and bribes in the hopes of inheriting his fortune. Along the way, Volpone's plans become increasingly convoluted, and he is eventually caught and punished for his deceitful behavior. The play is known for its sharp wit and biting satire, and is often seen as a commentary on the greed and corruption of society. It also explores themes of morality, justice, and the nature of human desire.Volpone is considered one of Jonson's greatest works, and is still performed and studied today. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless themes and its ability to entertain and provoke thought.A Hold thee, Mosca, Take of my hand; thou strik'st on truth, in all: And they are enuious, terme thee Parasite. Call forth my Dwarfe, my Eunuch, and my Foole, And let them make me sport. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
