BENIN CITY, NIGERIA (1590 CE): Larger than Lisbon, as the Portuguese who traded there kept remarking, the capital of the Benin Empire casts bronze plaques so accomplished that for decades after they were looted, European scholars tried to attribute them to anyone other than Africans. Three hundred years later a British punitive expedition will burn the city and carry those bronzes away.
