Virtue in the Age of AI: The Self begins with the premise that the first ethical challenge of artificial intelligence is not technological. It is personal. Before we can ask how institutions should govern AI or how society should regulate it, we must first ask how individuals can use powerful tools without surrendering judgment, responsibility, discipline, or agency.
Drawing on the tradition of virtue ethics while confronting the realities of modern life, The Self examines the qualities of character necessary to remain fully human in an age of increasingly capable machines. Through humility, prudence, courage, perseverance, and temperance, it explores how AI can amplify both our strengths and our weaknesses, how convenience can quietly become dependence, and why technological capability can never substitute for moral judgment.
This is neither an argument against artificial intelligence nor a prescription for retreating from technological change. It is an argument for learning to use AI well.
The central question is not whether the machine can think, create, advise, or decide. It is whether we will continue to cultivate the character necessary to know when to trust it, when to question it, when to resist it, and when responsibility remains ours alone.
The Self is the first volume of Virtue in the Age of AI, a three-part examination of character, human relationships, and society in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines.
