BEFORE SCIENCE FICTION HAD A HOME

The rise of SF (or sci-fi) as a genre was boosted by a new generation of SF-only pulp magazines from 1926 onwards. But science fiction was published (and popular) in the general run of fiction magazines which had their heyday before the 1930s. Literary gems of science fiction published in the general fiction magazines of the early 20th Century deserve a new audience. In this era, science fiction grew and matured with the input of such writers as Ray Cummings, Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs and A. Merritt.

How would you track down the SF content of a magazine which also might contain adventure, romance, westerns, detective and mystery stories?

You don't have to. Someone else already has, and the results are contained in this Checklist.

Also included within is a generous showcase of magazine cover illustrations of SF stories, to give something of the flavour of the period.

VINTAGE S.F. IN THE POPULAR MAGAZINES: A Checklist 1874-1936 is a must for the virtual bookshelf of any SF reader exploring the genre's early classics.
