Twenty-three centuries ago, a philosopher named Zhuang Zhou wrote stories about a fish that becomes a bird, a butcher whose knife never dulls after nineteen years, a skull that argues death beats life, and a tree that survives precisely because it's worthless. His book became one of the two foundational texts of philosophical Daoism - and one of the strangest, funniest, and most quietly devastating books in the history of thought.
This edition presents all thirty-three chapters of the Zhuangzi in full - the Inner, Outer, and Miscellaneous Chapters - restored against the received Chinese text.
Each chapter appears twice: first as a Plain Reading, rendered in clear modern English with nothing added and nothing explained, and then as a Verse - the same material distilled into short, image-driven stanzas. No commentary stands between you and the text itself.
A single Afterword closes the book, written by a clinician who has spent decades working with fascia and the nervous system, connecting core Daoist ideas - the Dao, Ziran, Wu Wei, the Uncarved Block - to what actually happens in a body under a therapist's hands. It's there for whoever wants it, and easy to skip for whoever doesn't.
Zhuangzi never wrote to be explained. This edition tries, for once, to simply get out of the way.
