Few statements of Jesus have generated more anxiety, debate, and theological speculation than His warning about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. In the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 12:22-32; Mark 3:22-30; Luke 12:10), the saying appears at a decisive moment: after Jesus frees a man from demonic oppression, the Pharisees and scribes charge that His power comes not from God but from Beelzebul. Jesus responds with parabolic reasoning about a divided kingdom and a strong man-and then issues the solemn declaration that this particular form of blasphemy will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. Every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
