Revelation 20:5-6 contains one of the most debated statements in the New Testament: This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. Few verses carry such theological weight, and few have sparked as much disagreement across Christian history.
This book offers a transparent, text-driven exploration of the first resurrection, moving beyond impressions and confessional systems to test the leading interpretations against the biblical evidence. Using a nine-variable rubric, the study evaluates how well each hypothesis accounts for the Greek wording, literary structure, historical context, canonical theology, and pastoral function of the passage. Each chapter examines a different dimension-lexical precision, narrative placement, cultural correspondence, theological coherence, and more-while providing comparative tables, clear explanations, and reflection questions for readers.
Rather than forcing a simplistic literal versus spiritual choice, the analysis demonstrates how Revelation's vision integrates blessing, holiness, priestly reign, and immunity from the second death into a coherent eschatological hope. The book situates the passage within Johannine theology, Second Temple Jewish resurrection expectations, and the Apocalypse's emphasis on overcoming and martyrdom, showing how the first resurrection functions as both a divine act of vindication and a structural hinge in the drama of judgment and triumph.
Accessible yet rigorous, this volume equips readers-whether premillennial, amillennial, postmillennial, or simply exegetical-to weigh the evidence themselves. It is both a scholarly resource and a pastoral encouragement, reminding believers that death will not have the final word and that faithful endurance is grounded in the certain hope of resurrection.
