Dorian, a motel night clerk, acquires an uncanny ability to mimic people's talents. When his best friend, Cadence, is taken by Charon, the ferryman, he must travel to the Underworld to use his newly found abilities to rescue and bring her home. He is joined on his quest by Gary, a Dayhound (dog by day and a man at night), and Leslie, a bodybuilding, 1970's throwback. Their mission merges with that of Reese, an otherworldly creature (vampire) trying to rescue her husband from a fate worse than being undead. Their new alliance equips Dorian with a breastplate that allows him and his companions to travel through time. Along the way, he is joined by a Cromangi (part crow, part man, part corgi) named Griffin, and receives guidance from Charon's associate Cate (a three-headed cat) who is concerned that Cadence's abduction is small part of a bigger plan that is headed toward disaster.
