TO LOVE AND DIE IN HARPURHEY The story begins in 1982, set against a background of the Falklands conflict, The Jam, and a crumbling Mancunian landscape, former army guardsman and now hardened copper DS Jack Clowrey works in and around the notorious Harpurhey estate of North Manchester. Jack rages constantly against the dark underbelly of a criminal world, a night time economy many never see. The (QSG) Quality Street gang, professional bank robbers, small time lags and foremost, the feared Kelly family. Make no mistake though, he's after them all. To do this Jack needs a third eye. His speciality, police informants, grasses, a way in. There exists a code, unwritten maybe, but one Jack always tries to stick to. Do right by the law and him, and he would be fair. Cross and no deal. Then comes the bitterest pill in the shape of Lisa Rogers. Lisa and her two small children enter Jack's world like any grass, looking for a way out with the promise of a new life, if she helps to put away her robbing, bullying, no good, boyfriend Stephen Kelly. Also, in the background, lurks a serial killer, this allied to mob warfare on the estate, tit for tat murders, and all hell breaking loose, it isn't surprising that when the finale comes, it is brutal and unforeseen. To love and die in Harpurhey tells this story, as DS Jack Clowrey takes on the Kelly's, and for a cop who always played by the book, an ending that leaves even him, who thought he'd experienced everything this job could throw at him, reeling. The AuthorsJohn Ludden is a highly experienced author/playwright from Manchester, who has been published in three languages. John's work includes chronicling the history of Manchester United with the highly acclaimed A Tale of Two Cities: Manchester United/Real Madrid: 1957-1968, foremost amongst his work on that subject. Also, the now cult classic Once Upon a Time in Naples, is the basis for the Diego Maradona movie by Oscar winning director Asif Kapadia, currently winning rave reviews across the world. John has also written a host of well received novels and factual works, including the 'Quality' gangster series, and the history of Manchester's oldest and most famous boxing gym. Collyhurst and Moston: There is a light that will never go out. He has also had his first stage play successfully performed. Once Upon a Time in Salford: The story of the Salford Sioux. He's also supplied the monologues for a BBC Sounds documentary on the bombing of Coventry during World War two. Kevin was born in Manchester into a working-class family, having completed a standard education he left school at the age of fifteen with no qualifications, and after employment in casual work he joined the British Army serving in the Grenadier Guards. After leaving the army in 1980, he joined Greater Manchester police serving for thirty years, twenty-six of which was spent working as a detective. During his police career he served in numerous specialised departments, and has experience in both overt and covert policing roles.
