Winning isn't everything-and sometimes being brave enough to try is something to celebrate!
Six-year-old Maple Wafflehoffer lives in Waffleville with her Mama, Papa, and brother, Zack. Every year, her family looks forward to the county fair and its famous waffle-baking competition. This year, Maple decides she's finally old enough to carry on the family tradition and enter the competition herself.
Maple is determined to make the best waffles she has ever made. She measures the flour, adds the eggs and milk, and folds in delicious blueberries, hoping her special recipe will earn her the first-place ribbon.
But there's one problem.
Priscilla Fry, the school bully, is competing too-and she's won the competition two years in a row!
Maple crosses her fingers and hopes this will be her year. But when the winners are announced, Maple doesn't take home first place.
At first, she's disappointed-especially when Priscilla teases her about losing. Then Maple notices something more important: her family is cheering and clapping, proud of her for having the courage to enter and doing her very best.
Maple soon discovers that you don't have to come in first place to be a winner.
With an encouraging message about confidence, good sportsmanship, perseverance, and learning to handle disappointment, Maple's First Competition reminds young children that second place-or even last place-is nothing to be ashamed of. Trying something new, doing your best, and having the courage to participate are achievements worth celebrating.
And there's always next year!
A heartwarming story for children learning that the greatest prize isn't always the first-place ribbon-sometimes it's being proud of yourself for trying.
