The Vigiles of Imperial Rome offers a comprehensive historical examination of the Vigiles Urbani, the dedicated corps of firefighters and night watchmen established by Emperor Augustus to protect the city of Rome. P.K. Baillie Reynolds provides a meticulous study of this essential institution, detailing its administrative structure, recruitment processes, and daily duties within the complex urban environment of the imperial capital.
The work explores the evolution of the Vigiles from their inception following a series of devastating fires to their role as a permanent paramilitary force. Reynolds delves into the archaeological and epigraphic evidence to reconstruct the locations of their barracks (stationes) and outposts (excubitoria) throughout the city's fourteen regions. By analyzing the legal and social status of the men who served-initially freedmen seeking citizenship-the book sheds light on the social mobility and organizational sophistication of the Roman state.
This scholarly investigation serves as an invaluable resource for readers interested in Roman military history, urban administration, and the history of firefighting. The Vigiles of Imperial Rome provides crucial insights into how one of the world's first organized emergency services maintained order and safety in the ancient world's most populous metropolis.
