Four months after opening Leviathan Investigations, Ryder Stone and Katherine Grace take what appears to be a routine domestic case. A Sarasota woman has found a prepaid phone hidden beneath the spare tire of her husband's Ford Edge. She believes he is having an affair. Ryder expects she may be right.
The phone says otherwise.
Its calls are brief. Its contacts reveal little. There are no romantic messages, no convenient confession, and no obvious crime waiting behind the screen. Instead, Ryder and Katherine find traces of something quieter: favors exchanged between people who understand that private information can become valuable before the person it belongs to realizes it has moved.
A schedule. An address. A name. A routine. A conversation never meant to travel beyond the room where it happened.
Individually, the details seem harmless. Together, they suggest a network in which ordinary information is being collected and passed along by people who may never understand the larger purpose they serve.
Then a second phone disappears.
A third surfaces.
And someone begins steering the investigation.
Leads appear at exactly the right moment. Questions produce answers that feel almost prepared. People Ryder has not yet approached seem to know what he is looking for. The deeper he and Katherine go, the harder it becomes to determine whether they are uncovering the network or simply following a path someone designed for them.
What began inside one marriage expands into a mystery about privacy, access, leverage, and the invisible value of information. Some of the people involved may believe they are simply doing favors. Others may understand only their small part of an exchange. But somewhere in the chain is someone who knows exactly how valuable a fact can become when it reaches the right person first.
Every discovery raises another question. If the hidden phone was never primarily about the man carrying it, why was it placed where it could eventually be found? If the second phone mattered enough to disappear, who removed it? And if the third belongs to the same system, why does its appearance feel less like a discovery than an invitation?
Ryder has spent enough of his life investigating people to know evidence can be concealed. This case teaches him something more unsettling: evidence can also be presented. A clue can be true and still mislead. A fact can be accurate and still send an investigator in the wrong direction. Manipulation does not always require a lie. Sometimes it requires deciding which truth another person sees first.
As Ryder and Katherine close in on the architecture behind the phones, the distinction between investigator and target begins to narrow. Someone anticipates their questions. Someone seems to know their movements. And someone appears less interested in stopping the investigation than in making certain it reaches a particular conclusion.
The Third Phone is a tense Ryder Talon Stone mystery about marriage, privacy, manipulation, and the dangerous power of knowing something before everyone else does. In a case where every call may serve more than one purpose, Ryder must determine not only who is communicating, but who is listening-and why.
Because some calls don't give instructions. They confirm what already happened.
The mystery isn't who is calling. It's who needs to know the call was answered.
