The options wheel is often presented as a simple cycle: write a put, accept the shares if assigned, write a covered call, sell the shares if assigned, and begin again.
But a wheel should never be forced to turn.
The Patient Wheel is a practical Australian guide to using the options wheel as a disciplined capital-management process rather than a machine for generating constant premium. Written for investors working with ASX-listed options, it brings together the patient buying principles of The Patient Bid and the patient selling principles of The Patient Offer.
The book begins with the underlying investment-not the option chain. Before writing a cash-secured put, the investor must identify a business or exchange-traded product worth owning, establish an acceptable purchase price, reserve sufficient cash and consider the consequences of assignment. Before writing a covered call, the investor must remain comfortable owning the shares, identify a genuine sale price and be willing to deliver the covered parcel if assigned.
Support and resistance zones, market regime and exponential moving averages can help place a proposed position in context. An EMA may be understood as an average consensus of traded-price value over its selected timeframe. It is a useful reference, not a price to which the market must return. Technical analysis can improve timing and patience, but it cannot establish business quality, eliminate risk or make an unsuitable option contract safe.
With a practical focus on the Australian market, The Patient Wheel examines:
- choosing suitable underlying investments before considering premium;
- establishing separate owner purchase and sale prices;
- recognising support, resistance, trend, range and changing market regimes;
- using EMAs without treating them as predictions;
- selecting put and call strikes and expiries;
- navigating thinner ASX option markets, spreads and limit orders;
- preparing for expiry, closing, rolling and assignment;
- reassessing ownership after put assignment;
- deciding when to hold shares without writing a call;
- measuring full portfolio exposure and simultaneous assignment risk;
- managing dividends, distributions, corporate events, records and tax questions;
- comparing the complete capital path with cash and direct share ownership; and
- knowing when to restart, pause, repair or retire a wheel.
Assignment is not automatically a failure. Expiry is not automatically a success. Rolling is two transactions, not an automatic rescue. A profitable premium can accompany a poor investment decision, while a disciplined process can still experience an adverse outcome.
Most importantly, waiting is treated as a legitimate position. Cash may remain cash because no suitable put exists. Shares may remain unoptioned because no covered call offers an acceptable sale. Released capital may wait because the next opportunity has not earned the right to proceed.
