Every language on Earth has a word for the thing that sits on your chest in the dark. They all describe the same visitor.

When Daniel Holt was six years old, he woke in the night unable to move, unable to speak, certain that something was in the room with him. His grandmother had a word for it, carried over from the old country: mara. She taught him the small protections - sleep on your side, keep something sharp on the sill - and told him the thing was only counting. The paralysis followed him through childhood. Then he left for college, and for thirty-one years it let him go.

Now Daniel is a hydrogeologist who has spent his life mapping the water that moves through the hidden rooms of the earth. And something is happening below.

In a single instant, on every continent at once, the ground let out a note too low to hear - a sound that should have been impossible to make in unison. Aquifers are dropping in perfect synchrony. New passages, smooth as if bored, are opening downward in caves that have been surveyed for a century. Animals are climbing up out of the dark to die in the light. And all over the world people are waking in the night unable to move - and then some of them are rising in their sleep and walking down.

Daniel already knows the word for what is reaching the surface. He has known it since he was six. To understand what it wants, he will have to go back to the swallow hole outside the town where he grew up - the one his childhood friend walked into, unafraid, and never came out of - and follow it down to the place where the counting is done.

The Mara is a novella of cosmic horror about sleep, stone, and deep time: about the possibility that the dark beneath our feet was never empty, has never been empty, and has been aware of us far longer than we have been afraid of it.
