He found the marks at sixteen. He found his father at a 7-Eleven.
Deshawn is a foster kid in Klamath Falls, Oregon. No parents. No permanence. No reason to believe that anything in his life will last. Then three circles appear on his wrist overnight-warm, humming, pulling him toward a lake sixty miles north that holds something seven thousand years old in its depths.
At the 7-Eleven, he meets Ray. Mid-fifties. Same marks. The first person who looks at Deshawn and sees something other than a case file. Ray drives him to Crater Lake. The entity reaches for Deshawn's mind-and what it sends back is not instructions or demands but recognition. It says: I know what it is to be alone. I marked you because your loneliness and mine are the same frequency.
At twenty-five, Deshawn's marks are changing. Growing. Elaborating into a pattern no other marked person carries. He is not a node in the network. He is the network's map-the amplifier, the biological signal booster the entity has been growing on his skin for nine years. When the planetary choir is ready to sing, Deshawn will be the volume.
At forty, the choir assembles. Every entity on Earth converges its signal on Crater Lake. Seven billion human voices flow through the lattice on Deshawn's arm. For eleven seconds, he carries the voice of the entire planet. And the only thing that keeps him from breaking is the man standing beside him-the man who has been standing beside him since a Saturday morning in a convenience store twenty-four years ago.
The Mark of Deshawn is one life told in three acts-a story about what it means to be chosen by something ancient and loved by someone ordinary. It is the human heart of the Loop Universe: proof that the most important frequency is not the one that reaches the stars. It's the one that calls every Sunday.
For readers of Kindred, The Stars Are Legion, and anyone who knows that family is not blood. Family is who shows up.
The voice that mattered most was the quiet one. The one that said: I'm here. You're my kid.
