Rasa never dreamed of America.
When a friend convinces her to enter the U.S. diversity visa lottery from her kitchen in Kaunas, Lithuania, it is little more than a joke. Then she wins.
Suddenly, Rasa must choose between the life she understands and a future she cannot imagine. Taking her husband, Viktoras, her teenage daughter, Egle, and her young son, Mantas, to Chicago means leaving behind her mother, her language, her routines, and nearly everything that has ever made a place feel like home.
America offers opportunity, but it also exposes fractures that an ocean cannot repair. As Rasa struggles with English, unfamiliar work, homesickness, and the quiet humiliation of beginning again, Viktoras grows increasingly bitter and volatile. When his drinking finally crosses a line Rasa can no longer excuse, she must build another new life-this time without him.
Daniel Hale has spent his own life trying to repair what other people break. An Iowa-born engineer, writer, divorced father, and habitual fixer, Daniel believes love is something proven through work, protection, and providing whatever people need. Rasa has learned to distrust anyone who needs to rescue her.
Neither expects the other.
What begins cautiously grows into a marriage that joins two complicated families and two very different histories. Through children, weddings, grandchildren, old wounds, new countries, and distances measured in both miles and silence, Rasa and Daniel discover that loving a family does not guarantee the power to hold every part of it together.
Spanning Lithuania and America across decades, The Lithuanian Thread is a deeply human novel about immigration, marriage, parenthood, cultural identity, estrangement, and the invisible connections that endure after everything familiar has changed.
Because a thread does not remain unbroken by remaining straight.
It bends. It knots. It joins other colors.
And sometimes, despite everything, it holds.
