This is the sequel to the novel Return to a Country at War. General Larry Kinkade and Commander Laura Cole after returning from the past but 11 years after their journey originally began have been in seclusion at Kinkade's niece's ranch. They have spent the past several years while avoiding U.S. Secret Service turning the ranch into a financial success. Despite that success our heroes had become restless. In fact as the story begins, Commander Cole has already move on feeling there has to be more in life than spending the remainder of her life on a ranch in Colorado. Kinkade now alone with his niece but without his friend has become depressed and restless. With the support of his niece Kinkade has regained a new eagerness to once again fly. However, considering a world after 9/11 with nothing to support his credentials or his past, he must find a way to regain what he once had. Once again with the prodding of his niece, he recalls a nephew who he learns is now the head of admissions at the University of Norte Dame. He risks his identity and submits his application for admittance as a freshman for the upcoming year. Being financially independent thanks to the success of his niece's ranch he advises he requires no financial aid and is strictly looking to gain an education to fly. Once again rolling the dice, he uses his own name on the application. Surprisingly he receives a response from the president of the university, a Father Joyce for an interview. Larry Kinkade soon discovers that the president is actually a former Rio he flew with during the Vietnam War almost fifty years ago. Bringing his famous horse Bugs Dooley to join him on a farm off campus Larry is admitted for the upcoming fall year. While being shown around campus by a young lady assigned by Father Joyce, who also happens to be the captain of the cheerleaders, Larry unexpectedly after returning a football to a coach leading a practice is asked to assist with the passing drills. From the time they see the one time quarterback of the Air Force Academy throw a football, he works his way from being a backup to the starting quarterback taking the Fighting Irish to chance at the National Championship. There are many twists and turns on his way to the next chapter in his life which includes the return of Laura Cole and a heartbreaking meeting with the wife he left behind so many years ago.
