Two former MI6 officers, Bill Simpson and Eileen Harriman, die on the same day on opposite sides of the world. Coincidence? What was the secret project they had been working on years earlier? Was that what drove Simpson to continue his obsessive search for an English double agent in Istanbul? And what was Simpson's link with an enigmatic Turkish intelligence officer? Why was his body found on wasteland not far from her home? James Davidson's hopes of becoming the next Director General of MI6 are dashed when he is sent to Istanbul to investigate. He will immediately become a person of interest for the Turkish intelligence officer, putting his life at risk. In Argentina a young doctor has just discovered that his biological father was a high-ranking Nazi war criminal, not the much-loved man who had brought him up. In turmoil he sets off to trace his biological father's footsteps across Europe, ending up in a traumatic encounter with Commander Kadir Demercol, the man who arrested his father and brought him to trial. Emotionally exhausted, he heads for Australia, where, by chance, he meets and falls in love with Anoushka Demercol, Kadir's daughter. She is lodging in a house once owned by Eileen Harriman. During renovations, a package is found addressed to former Superintendent John Arbuthnot, friend of Kadir.
