I knew nothing of a reality outside of war. The purpose of my existence was to heal the wounded and return life to the dead. However, the aftermath of the destruction I routinely witnessed began putting a strain on my mind and spirit.
I was lonely and longed for someone to speak with, a companion. I wanted someone to share my pain, someone who understood. Yet, I endured alone, constantly looking out over endless death and desolate remains.
Her eyes never moved, but she used her free hand to point where she looked. I followed her arm to a large, bright object suspended in the sky. I felt my heart sink as I knew it was over.
The emergency broadcast warning began blaring from our phones; Sam pulled hers from her pocket to read the message. She turned the radio on, and we sat in silence waiting. Police have received numerous reports of a disturbance in the night sky. Some mention it appears to be fire, but this has not been confirmed. Investigations are underway, and when we have more information coming in, we will let you know. Until then, authorities are asking for everyone to please stay in your homes and to remain calm.----
