A Christmas legend by Henry Van Dyke that reimagines the origin of the Christmas tree within a medieval European setting, blending Christian tradition with narrative symbolism. First published in the early twentieth century, this short work presents a reflective account of faith, transformation, and the reinterpretation of older customs within a Christian framework.
Set in a northern forest during the winter season, the story follows a missionary figure who encounters a group of warriors engaged in a sacrificial ritual. Through a moment of intervention and reinterpretation, a symbol of death is transformed into one of life, establishing the Christmas tree as an emblem of renewal and spiritual continuity.
Van Dyke's prose is measured and deliberate, combining elements of legend, moral narrative, and seasonal reflection. The work has remained a recurring presence in Christmas literature, often read alongside other traditional holiday texts for its symbolic treatment of the season.
This edition presents the original text in a clear and stable format, preserving its narrative structure while offering a readable modern typesetting.
