Playboy aristocrat Regulus finds himself enthroned to rule his country through no ambition of his own. He flees his homeland for a new life on the high seas, expecting never to return. But the goddess of fortune has other ideas.
The year is 2202. A new world has emerged from the chaos of a climate apocalypse and a technological collapse. Great sailing ships ply the oceans, and new maritime powers compete for dominance. It is a world ripe for renewal, and the goddess Fortuna wants to shape it in her image.
Regulus Zegulus briefly rules Grith, an impoverished archipelago that once was coastal New England. When he's deposed in a coup, he escapes to sea aboard a smuggler's magnificent schooner with her glamorous and debauched crew of Fortuna cultists. Regulus hated being Bompus of Grith and has no ambition to reclaim his throne, but the goddess demands it as the means to restore her faded power and glory.
While his homeland descends into horrific civil war, Regulus is hunted by assassins and harried by pirates on the high seas. His voyage takes him to the Icelandic Empire, where he thinks he's found safe harbor. Instead, he ends up tangled in a web of intrigue that risks provoking the wrath of Grith's superpower neighbor, Vermont, and its patron god.
To fulfill his oaths to Fortuna, Regulus must navigate alliances with his eccentric crew, a lost love, a ruthless spymaster and sea nomads from the submerged land of Florida.
When the gods go to war, mortals must hoist sails and join in battle.
Blending raucous humor with gripping action, mythic romance, and adventurous sensuality, The Favorite is a post-apocalyptic high seas adventure featuring an unlikely crew of misfits who find themselves tied to the whims of a goddess.
