The smirk on Mr. Newman's face disappears, just as quickly as it had appeared. I decide it's best to continue onward, before these two start up once more. Mr. Newman, please tell us about your movements last night after we left the party. I was with Ellie, so I need help filling in the gaps between then and this morning.
Mr. Newman, takes a few seconds to compose himself, I left the party and slept soundly until woken up for this nonsense.
Ellie and I both look at each other, before Ellie rolls her eyes. Ellie puts her attention back to Mr. Newman, you do know you are suspected of murder, right?
I can see Ellie is about to berate the man even more. I gently take my foot and give her a slight kick, as if to tell her to knock it off. Mr. Newman, if you could be a little more detailed in your account? I ask, trying to get more out of him.
Fine, he says, relenting. Shortly after the girl collapsed, the other drunk cornered me and began shouting obscenities in front of everyone. He was than swiftly escorted out of the building by Mr. Cohen's security.
What exactly was he saying to you? I ask.
With how he was slurring his words? It was like the barking of a mad dog, Mr. Newman, says snobbishly.
It sounds like Mr. Jenkins was angry with Mr. Newman. Had you met Mr. Jenkins before yesterday?
Mr. Newman sticks his nose up in the air, do you think I associate with bums and drunkards?
Can I take a stab at that one? Ellie asks, without making eye contact with Mr. Newman.
No, I respond, between my teeth, please continue, Mr. Newman.
Mr. Newman glares at Ellie, before continuing, socializing after that episode became awkward, so I left and returned here. I wasn't tired, so I sat in the parlor to have a drink. That man, Banner, joined me, he says, nodding his head in Mr. Banner's direction. The woman came by at some point as well but left in a huff. About a half an hour to an hour later, I retreated to my room for the night. That's everything. Are we done?
Did Mr. Jenkins leave his room at all while you were up? I ask.
Thankfully, he did not. At least I didn't have to hear any more of his lunatic ravings.
Do you remember noticing anything suspicious or out of place last night? I ask, as Ellie is still diligently writing everything down, word for word.
No, but then again, I didn't anticipate that I would spend the next day questioned by children from the school of bothersome.
Is bothersome, two r's or one r? Ellie asks, just to be bothersome. You think I would know this from working at The Midnight Hour.
Just hearing where Ellie works sends Mr. Newman into a rage. Tabloids, the lot of you! Always looking for your next company, or person to slander, he says, waving his finger in Ellie's face.
Ellie stays calm and doesn't move a muscle. It's only slander if it's not true, she says with a wicked smile.
I take a couple of steps back, and grab Ellie around the waist. I think that's all we need for now, Mr. Newman. Thank you, I say, as I drag Ellie away from Mr. Newman, as I feel neither one is about to back down.
