In The Cathedral, Richard L. Kennedy examines the boundary where science stops being a method of discovery and begins acting like an institution of belief. The issue is not whether science has given humanity extraordinary things-it has. The issue is whether a conclusion remains scientific when evidence, common sense, and even direct observation must be bent to preserve it.
Kennedy begins with a simple challenge: listen. Compare the restless sound assigned to a quasar with the low drone assigned to a black hole. They do not sound like the same thing. Yet modern cosmology asks us to accept that they are merely different appetites of the same unseen object. When our senses object, we are told to trust the framework.
From Karl Popper's demand that theories risk failure to Thomas Kuhn's account of paradigms protected from challenge, The Cathedral follows the gradual transformation of a useful model into a defended structure. It revisits Newton's caution, Eddington's eclipse, Einstein's replacement of the aether, the elevation of spacetime, the mystery drawer of dark matter and dark energy, and the credentialed systems that decide which questions may be asked without professional penalty.
This is not an argument against science. It is an argument for the science that made progress possible: observation before authority, questions before consensus, and models that remain answerable to reality.
With plain language, historical examples, and sharp visual illustrations, Kennedy asks readers to consider an unsettling possibility: perhaps some of the universe's most celebrated explanations survive not because they have settled the questions, but because the institution built around them has become too grand to disturb.
The Cathedral is for readers willing to listen for themselves, examine the foundations, and ask whether the framework still serves reality-or whether reality has been asked to serve the framework.
