It is the season, and the fashionable little town, with its gay casinos, grassy walks, and its marvellous attractions, looks supremely gay. The charming position of the hotel, added to this its relishing cleanliness, and the manipulation of a perfect cuisine, renders it a welcome haven for both the beau monde and the epicurean bachelorhood of life to resort thither. Among the list of fashionable visitors are Colonel and Mrs. Frapply, the latter pale and fragile-looking. They occupy a charming little salon, and have but just arrived, en route for Rome. Colonel Frapply, man of the world as he is, wishes to initiate his newly-wedded wife into the arts of society at home and abroad, and in consequence is present at every festivity that pleases him and takes his fancy. He has a passion for the gaming-tables; his name once became a byword among people there, and his luck proverbial. Therefore Colonel Frapply is well known in Nice. They have put up at the fashionable hotel, and people notice the sweet, sorrowful face of the young bride, and wonder at it. Scarcely once has Margaret smiled since the day she became Horace Frapply's wife. Her eye has scanned over the beautiful churches and museums of Antwerp. She has visited gay Paris, with its boulevards illuminated and brilliant with light and fashion. The Grand Opera House has charmed her ears, the theatres and galleries all beheld her presence.
