On May 1, 1981, a small hand-drawn advertisement appeared in a college newspaper in Tucson, Arizona. It said almost nothing: a cryptic callsign, one word - Richmond - and a line in Chinese: Long live Chairman Mao. No product. No explanation. No one to call.
It has run every year since. For forty-five years.
Someone has been buying space in the Arizona Daily Wildcat - in the fuller years an entire page, at real cost - and filling it with cuneiform tablets, Reformation woodcuts, graduate-level physics, encrypted coordinates, chess positions, and scripture in fourteen languages. Buried inside the ornament, always, is the same skeleton: a meeting notice. A day. An hour. A place. The day can be computed - the ads date themselves in astronomers' Julian numbers, and they all point to the same feast on the same anniversary. The hour has never been cracked. The place is a hotel you can enter but never leave.
The Tuning Fork is the first full-length analysis of the May Day Mystery: what the pages actually say, what four decades of readers have verifiably solved, what remains genuinely open, and what happened in 2026, when the ads began to say goodbye. It is not a puzzle book with an answer at the back. The corpus itself warned its readers long ago, in a sentence this book takes seriously: It does not matter if the Gold has already been removed.
