The Transition of Complexity: Human Social Transformation and the Future from an ICI Perspective develops a quantitative and cross-domain framework for understanding the long-term evolution of human societies. Starting from the Integrated Complexity Index (ICI), the book argues that social change cannot be adequately explained by linear historical narratives alone. Empires, institutions, markets, technologies, and knowledge systems are treated as complex systems whose stability depends on the dynamic balance between scale expansion and feedback integration.
The central analytical tool of the book is the ICI framework, which distinguishes between two dimensions of complexity. The first is the baseline scale of a system, represented by the combined effects of functional differentiation, effective population or entity volume, and information-processing throughput. The second is the depth of emergent integration, represented by feedback loops, interaction frequency, and memory complexity. Through this structure, the book examines how human societies moved from low-complexity hunter-gatherer groups to agricultural settlements, early civilizations, classical empires, medieval institutional formations, industrial societies, digital networks, and emerging hyper-complex systems.
A major contribution of the book is its reinterpretation of historical transitions as dynamical phase shifts rather than merely as sequences of events. The near-synchronous crises of the Han dynasty and the Roman Empire, the stabilizing role of medieval religious and scholarly networks, the accelerating effects of printing, industrialization, telecommunication, and digital platforms, and the contemporary fragility of global supply chains and algorithmic information systems are all analyzed through the same set of parameters.
