In 1915, the Royal Naval Division underwent intensive training to transform naval reservists and volunteers into effective infantry. Instruction encompassed rifle drill, musketry, fieldcraft, trench routine and infantry tactics, combining naval discipline with the demands of land warfare. Initial training at Crystal Palace was followed by concentrated work at depots including Blandford, Portsmouth, Chatham and Plymouth. Experienced Royal Marines and Guards instructors helped bring recruits to active-service standards, while compressed courses-typically five weeks at the Divisional Depot-reflected the urgent need for reinforcements. By the summer of 1915, the Division was preparing for deployment to the Dardanelles, where its training was put to immediate operational use during the Gallipoli campaign. The resulting programme illustrates the rapid adaptation required to convert naval personnel into a capable fighting formation for sustained infantry operations.
