The Tragedy of Sophonisba is a play written by James Thomson in 1730. It tells the story of Sophonisba, a Carthaginian princess who is forced into marriage with the Numidian king, Massinissa, as part of a political alliance. However, Sophonisba is already in love with another man, Syphax, and the two of them plan to run away together. When Massinissa discovers their plan, he captures Syphax and threatens to kill him unless Sophonisba agrees to marry him. Sophonisba chooses to poison herself rather than betray her love for Syphax. The play explores themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of political alliances.
