The Tragedy of Sophonisba is a play written by Scottish poet and playwright James Thomson in 1730. The play is based on the historical figure of Sophonisba, a Carthaginian noblewoman who was married off to a Numidian prince but later became embroiled in a conflict between Rome and Carthage. The play follows Sophonisba's struggles as she tries to navigate the political and personal tensions of her situation, ultimately leading to her tragic demise. The play is known for its exploration of themes such as love, duty, and honor, as well as its use of poetic language and dramatic tension. It is considered one of Thomson's most significant works and a classic example of 18th-century tragedy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
