Yes. As strange as it may sound to many readers today, before the racial laws of 1938 there were many Jews who supported Italian Fascism.
This book tells the stories of twelve of them.
They were very different people: politicians, military officers, businessmen, artists, and scientists. Some were fervent Fascists, others were above all loyal to their country, while some adhered to the National Fascist Party in a more superficial way - out of opportunism, conformity, or simple adaptation to the times.
All of them, however, were eventually forced to confront the racial laws.
Some remained loyal to the regime. Others became antifascists. Some survived the Holocaust; others did not - regardless of their loyalty.
The Tragedy of Italy's Fascist Jews explores one of the most complex and uncomfortable chapters of twentieth-century Italian history: the story of men who believed themselves fully Italian, fully Fascist, and who ultimately discovered that, for the regime they had served, being Jewish outweighed everything else.
