Horses have been a part of life in the American West since the early 1600's. Native Americans bred horses for distinct qualities to aid in their survival within this harsh landscape. One such trait was unusual color patterns. Horses we now know as Paints, Pintos, POA (Pony of the Americas), and Appaloosas were specifically bred to aid in camouflage while hunting in the deserts, as well as protection from the heat and sun. One of the areas with especially harsh living conditions is the desert terrain known as badlands. This area includes one of the United States National Parks called the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. This is the story of Toby, a Leopard Appaloosa who, along with his Paint and Pinto friends, works in the Painted Desert National Park as a Park Ranger horse. His trail partner is Ranger Mark and when Mark's young nephew comes to visit an ancient legend of the National Petrified Forest and Painted Desert Park is uncovered. Toby's Appaloosa heritage will be called upon to face a hidden danger in this most unusual setting, and possibly save a life.
