What will you do for your penance to God? That is the question Michael asks himself everyday. Michael's life after the army consists of donning a special mask and becoming to, what he refers to, as the Masked Man in order to do what the army taught him: get information out of someone through torture. Though Michael believes that he and his father are doing God's work in taking on the sins of others and getting information for those who need it, he is haunted by the events of his time in the Army, and struggles with being torn or whether or not what he does truly helps his soul heal, let alone helps those who hire him. Things change fast as Michael's father arranges for him to work exclusively for a defense contractor company that is owned by a cunning business man named Seth Zern, and his vicious associates Wyatt and Rome. At the same time, Michael finds himself in love with an intelligent and assertive woman named Grace. While Michael was already struggling with the weight of his past, and decisions of the present, as evident by nightmarish flashbacks, he now wrestles with wanting to keep that life separate from Grace as they continue to get closer. After finding relief in a support group for veterans run by an ally named Grant Klein, Michael finally feels close enough to Grace to reveal that his traumatization stems from when he tortured a child for information, and was then betrayed by his commanding officer and the platoon he belonged to. Michael's willingness to work with Zern and his goons reaches it's boiling point, and he is going to have to make a choice as to whether to live his life as the Masked Man, or live as Grace sees him, the man she loves.
